Your dentist has referred you for a specialist opinion and possibly treatment. This is with a view to providing you with the best care possible in the most appropriate setting. The planning and/or treatment that you require is likely of a complex nature and your dentist will be keen to avoid any unnecessary complications that could occur should they attempt to manage your care independently. Dentists that refer on appropriately and efficiently tend to be highly conscientious clinicians that want the best outcomes for their patients.
 
I endeavour to work closely with your regular dentist to achieve holistic and comprehensive outcomes and aim to keep them in close communication wherever appropriate.
Undergoing assessment and treatment with a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry provides a detailed multifaceted approach to your dental care with a clinician who has undergone strict quality assurance processes. Consultants in Restorative Dentistry usually provide specialist level dental care to adults requiring dental implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, gum treatment and root canal treatment. When choosing your dental Specialist, it is worth considering the following questions:
  • Has your Specialist been a Consultant in the NHS? If so you can be sure that their training has been long and rigorous. UK trained Consultants are very experienced in their chosen field.
  • Has your Specialist had quality assured postgraduate training in the work you require such as implants, crowns, bridges, dentures and gum treatment?
  • Does your Specialist offer to show you their results?
  • Can they tell you which risks apply to your case specifically?
  • Do you feel trust and confidence in their skills and expertise?
  • Have they been recommended to you by another dentist or patient?
  • Are they professional when dealing with you – not applying pressure on you to go ahead with the procedure?
  • Are their team sensitive, warm and helpful?
What can I expect when booking in?

All of my clinical colleagues, support staff and I are dedicated to providing high quality specialist level dental care in a friendly and comfortable environment. My approach is to take the time to understand your specific concerns, treatment aims and unique requests followed by a detailed and thorough examination. This facilitates my decision-making process whereby I can subsequently break down your choices into straightforward options whilst providing you with all of the necessary information and the time to ask any questions.

As part of the examination, with your consent, I may suggest taking some photos of your teeth. These can be beneficial for treatment planning and I tend to avoid taking any photos of your face to avoid easy identification unless necessary. 
Your treatment plan will always be bespoke, incorporating consideration of all of your relevant clinical and non-clinical needs. I would usually suggest that you take the time to consider the options and think of any further questions prior to proceeding with treatment. 

Following assessment, I will send a report back to your referring dentist in clinical terms, of which you should also receive a copy. I will also send you a detailed report summarising our discussions in jargon-free terms including a quote or fee estimate which you should usually receive within one to two weeks. In specialist practice the scope of treatment is so variable that a customised and itemised quote for treatment is individually calculated for each patient. Once you have had adequate time to decide what you would like to do, you can simply contact the practice and book in if you would like to proceed with treatment.

On occasion some work is best carried out to investigate individual teeth alongside some diagnostic work performed on models of your teeth. A more detailed estimate would then follow after such treatment. You can see some example fees here.

Achieving the best outcomes within restorative dentistry is a team working process involving the clinician, support staff and most of all the patient. Keeping us informed of any concerns, worries or expectations during treatment and working with us when undergoing complex procedures invariably results in the best outcomes.
Complications
Good planning usually highlights potential complications and these would be discussed with you. It is important that treatment is completed in as short a period of time as possible allowing for normal healing. Delays for whatever reason increase the risk of complications.
Emergency Care
I attend The Practice on Broadway on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The rest of my time is spent at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. I am rarely available immediately but messages are reliably passed on by good staff at these locations.
I have Consultant and Specialist colleagues who can help if required. Occasionally, it may be more convenient to contact your own dentist.
Outcomes and Warranties
I am usually optimistic and realistic about what can be achieved. Please ask me if you have specific enquiries not covered by the information that I have given you.
Naturally, when dealing with the human body, no guarantees are possible. 
Review and Maintenance
It will be your obligation to maintain meticulous oral hygiene and remain as plaque free as possible. Most of the problems encountered after extensive treatment are usually the result of a neglect of oral hygiene and diet advice. I cannot stress too strongly the need for your total co-operation in maintaining meticulous oral hygiene during and after your treatment. You should reduce your intake of sugar and maintain a nutritious diet that does not contribute to your oral problems. You will also need to use a high concentration fluoride tooth paste and fluoride rinse daily to reduce the possibility of dental decay. 
After most treatments you can return to normal care with your dentist. Regular annual review with x-rays after implant treatment provides guidance on long term success. If you do wish to undergo routine review with myself, it can sometimes be prudent to maintain registration with a General Dentist in case you require emergency dental care on a day that I am not available in practice.
